(Update October 30, 2013) See update below.
If you aren’t familiar with the Google smartphones, there currently exists a Nexus 4. That “4” is indicative of the 4-inch screen size. It’s not precisely 4-inches, but you catch my drift. With the big Google conference about to take place, rumors are surfacing about a new Nexus smartphone. Perhaps a Google Nexus 5? I would say that’s a safe bet.
The fact is Samsung just pushed out their new Galaxy 4 smartphone which is 5-inches. It does appear that the preferred size of a smartphone isn’t quite established. In a sense bigger is better, but to a point. Apple and their iPhone have sold the public that their size is the best size for a phone. Fair enough, but how much time do you spend with a smartphone using it as a phone? 1%? 5%? I bet it’s not much more than that. I would bet most people spend most of their time using apps, surfing the internet, or watching videos.
My point is this. A Nexus 5 is going to be an amazing device. It’s going to happen because the market is moving into the 5-inch sized smartphones. Apple is losing their influence and I would think people are not going to be raving mad at a 5-inch Nexus smartphone. I would think the Nexus 4 will still exist, albeit with a set of new features and new Android operating system.
It’s a bit too early to provide Nexus 5 details and specs. Those could come at any time though! The internet is a great place for leaks to happen before official product unveils. Even Apple is losing their ability to surprise. All this said, I would advise people shopping for a new phone to hold off until the Nexus 5 makes an appearance. I think Google should treat Canada fair when it comes to having a release date similar as that in the United States. It’s not clear if a company like Wind Mobile with get a Nexus 5, but it’s most likely considering they have the other Nexus phones.
You are going to read many different reviews for the Nexus 5 as it near a release date. One aspect that most reviews don’t mention is the big advantage to buying an official Google android device vs. a different android-based device from another company. For example, comparing the Samsung Galaxy S4 to the Nexus 5 will likely fetch a very similar comparison. However as I’ve learned myself, the big advantage to a Google Nexus 5 is that you get the latest and greatest Android OS. Don’t make any doubts about it, the new operating system will be on the Nexus 5.
There’s more than just getting the absolutely newest android operating system on a newly release Google device. It’s the updates! This is what many or most comparisons fail to mention. The fact is, and evidence data clearly shows the MASSIVE advantage in how quickly the Nexus devices get the new android updates. It’s not just a month or two difference, it’s substantial and it’s across the board of Nexus devices. You will get to enjoy new android updates fast faster and with greater frequency than other android-based smartphones on the market. My wife for example has a Huawei Ascend P1 and it’s not likely to ever see an updated android version. It’s stuck in the past. With a Nexus device you have very little to worry about. It will be the best supported and the easiest to update of all the available devices out there. Perhaps not a big deal to you now, but that’s because you may not realize how many new cool features which have been added in the future android updates. They say you can’t miss what you don’t know about. Well, this holds true when it comes to getting the latest and greatest android versions.
Update October 28, 2013: Looks like some specs went up on the Wind Mobile Facebook page! Here is what we got although they seem to be missing now.
Update September 3, 2013: Well, it does appear that a “slip up” by Google during their Android KitKat statue unveiling may have just shown the world the Nexus 5. The video which Google posted, has been taken down. The reason for the video being taken down? This:
That guy is holding a mystery device with Nexus branding. The hot suggestion is that he’s holding the upcoming Nexus 5. The rumors have been that the Nexus 5 will be similar to the LG G2 model that was unveiled recently. Specs are rumored to include the following:
